A short essay by શ્રીમાતાજી (The Mother, spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo) about why organisation and orderliness matter — not just for your room, but for your mind.

1

The essay

Hi, it's Patto! This essay asks: is being tidy just about keeping your room neat? Or does it say something deeper about how your MIND works? Read on to find out!
📖 What the essay says, step by step
1
School and exercise aren't meant to trouble you — they give you experiences that took humanity centuries to learn, so you don't have to discover everything alone.
2
Some children are disorganised — they lose or damage things, throw clothes around, and can't find their books when they need them. This shows their mind has no discipline either.
3
A room can LOOK tidy on the outside, but open the cupboard or drawer and find a total mess — this means the person's thoughts are just as jumbled as their hidden clutter.
4
The firm rule: no one who lets their things lie around carelessly can also have a mind that works in an organised, intelligent way. Outer mess = inner mess.
5
The positive example: શ્રી અરવિંદ (Sri Aurobindo) was surrounded by huge stacks of books and papers — yet every single item had its exact place, and he noticed instantly if anything was moved.
6
Practical advice: choose your activities carefully, take on only what you can finish properly, build your concentration (what takes an hour can shrink to 15 minutes with focus), and rest briefly between tasks to recharge.
Being organised outside and being organised inside (your thoughts, your focus) go together — one builds the other.
✨ The library example

A library has thousands of books — but every one is classified, catalogued, and shelved. Say the title, and within minutes it's in your hands. That's the essay's model of true organisation: not "few belongings," but many things, perfectly systemised.

💡 Even people who can't move can be perfectly organised

The essay mentions sick or bedridden people who couldn't physically handle their own belongings — yet they knew exactly where every item was ("open that drawer, left side, you'll find it"). This proves true વ્યવસ્થાશક્તિ (organisational power) lives in the MIND, not just in physical tidying.

Understand it deeply

Practice like the real exam

Here's a taste of the exam styles you'll see for this chapter.

MCQ style (1 mark each)

Short answer (2 marks)

Longer answer (3 marks)

The essay states that no person who lets their belongings lie around carelessly can, at the same time, have a mind that works intelligently and in an organised way. Physical disorder and mental disorder go together — someone whose things are scattered usually has thoughts that are just as jumbled and disconnected. That's why the essay treats tidiness as a sign of discipline, not just a chore.

4-mark question
