The story

Hi, it's Patto! This is a classic tale about King Vikramaditya of Ujjain — famous for being just as fair (ન્યાયી) as he was mighty (પ્રતાપી).
📖 The story, step by step

Long after King Vikramaditya was gone, Ujjain fell into ruin — grand palaces became empty fields where villagers grazed their cattle.

Shepherd boys played on a small mound there. When two boys fought, a third boy sitting on the mound would settle the argument with surprisingly wise, calm judgments — everyone found it hilarious and fun.

Even grown-ups started bringing their disputes to whichever boy happened to sit on that mound — and always got a shockingly wise verdict!

Word reached King Bhoj, who called it a miracle. His pandits explained: the mound likely hides Vikramaditya's throne underground — that's why anyone sitting there speaks with such wisdom!

Digging began. Beautifully carved stones emerged, and finally the magnificent throne itself — with lions at its base and winged fairies surrounding them.

The throne was placed in the royal court. But when King Bhoj tried to sit on it, a voice rose from the throne: "Stop! Answer first — is your heart truly pure?" The king hesitated... and the throne's fairies spread their wings and flew the whole throne away into the sky!
The king realized: "The shepherd boys' hearts must have been purer than mine!"
✨ The moral

True wisdom and the right to rule don't come from power or riches — they come from having a genuinely pure, honest heart. Even simple shepherd children can judge more fairly than a king, if their hearts are clean.

ટેકરા પર બેસનાર છોકરો ઠરેલ પણ ડાહ્યો ચુકાદો આપતો હતો.

પંડિતોએ કહ્યું, "મહારાજ, એ મેદાનમાં પ્રાચીન ઉજ્જૈનના ખંડેર છે. કદાચ ત્યાં ધરતીમાં વિક્રમાદિત્યનું ધર્માસન હોય અને આ છોકરાઓ તેના ઉપર બેસીને રાવ સાંભળતા હોય."

રાજાએ ઠરાવ કર્યો કે હવેથી બધી ફરિયાદ એ આસન પર બેસી સાંભળવી.

સિંહાસને રાજાને પૂછ્યું કે તેમનું દિલ ચોખ્ખું છે કે નહીં. રાજા વિચારમાં પડી ગયા અને જવાબ આપી ન શક્યા. તેથી સિંહાસનની પરીઓએ પાંખો પસારીને તેને આકાશમાં ઉડાવી દીધું.

વિસ્તૃત જવાબ

ઉજ્જૈનની ગણતરી પ્રાચીન કાળની સાત મોટી નગરીઓમાં થતી હતી, કારણ કે ત્યાં ન્યાયી અને પ્રતાપી રાજા વિક્રમાદિત્ય રાજ કરતા હતા. પણ સમય જતાં રાજા ચાલ્યા ગયા અને નગરીની દશા બેસી ગઈ — મોટા મહેલો અને કિલ્લાઓની જગ્યાએ ખાલી મેદાન થઈ ગયું.

રાજા વિક્રમાદિત્ય ખરેખર ઇતિહાસમાં થઈ ગયેલા પ્રાચીન માળવાના પ્રખ્યાત અને પ્રતાપી સમ્રાટ હતા. તેમનું શકજકારણ (શક સંવત) અને માળવી વિક્રમ સંવત — બંને કૅલેન્ડર (પંચાંગ) આજે પણ તેમની યાદમાં જ ચલાવવામાં આવે છે.

સિંહાસન ધરતીમાં દટાયેલું હતું અને ખૂબ સુંદર નકશીદાર પથ્થરોથી બનેલું હતું. તેના પાયામાં સિંહ મૂક્યા હતા અને સિંહને ફરતી પાંખાળી પરીઓ કોતરેલી હતી. જ્યારે કોઈ અયોગ્ય વ્યક્તિ તેના પર બેસવા જાય, ત્યારે તે વાત કરી શકતું અને પરીઓ પાંખો પસારીને તેને ઉડાવી પણ શકતી.

King Vikramaditya was a real king, not just a story character! He was a famous, powerful emperor of ancient Malwa (માળવા), a region in India. Even today, a special Indian calendar called વિક્રમ સંવત (Vikram Samvat) is named after him and used for Hindu festivals and dates — that's how important he was!
