રહું છેક તો, રાખતું કોણ છાનો,
મને દુ:ખી દેખી દુ:ખી કોણ થાતું,
મહાહેતવાળી દયાળી જ મા તું.
સુકામાં સુવાડે ભીને પોઢી પોતે,
પીડા પામું પંડે, તજે સ્વાદ તો તે,
મને સુખ માટે કટુ કોણ ખાતું,
મહા હેતવાળી દયાળી જ મા તું.
લઈ છાતી સાથે બચી કોણ લેતું,
તજી તાજું ખાજું મને કોણ દેતું,
મને કોણ મીઠા મુખે ગીત ગાતું,
મહા હેતવાળી દયાળી જ મા તું.
પડું કે ખડું તો ખમા આણી વાણી,
પડે પાંપણે પ્રેમનાં પૂર પાણી,
પછી કોણ પોતાતણું દૂધ પાતું,

A grown child remembers being a baby in the cradle — and realizes only a mother would sleep in the wet spot herself so her baby stays dry, eat bitter food herself so her baby gets the sweet, hold the baby close and sing, and comfort them with "ખમા" (there, there) whenever they fall or cry. Every stanza's final line is the poem's heartbeat: only a truly loving, kind mother does all this.
